About the Department

Medical Staff

We have Consultant staff trained in general neurology, who are specialists in dementia, epilepsy, headache, movement disorders, multiple sclerosis, motor neuron disease and behavioural sleep medicine. We provide emergency liaison services 24 hours per day, 7 days a week, staffed by Registrars and Consultants in neurology.

We collaborate closely with colleagues in neurosurgery, neurophysiology, neuropsychiatry, neuropathology and radiology both in Tayside and throughout Scotland.

Our contact details can be found via this link on the NHS Tayside Intranet.

In addition to offering regular outpatient clinics in Dundee, Arbroath and Perth, we have a large ward at our base in Ninewells Hospital for inpatient and day patient treatment of a variety of neurological conditions. It is staffed by nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and speech and language therapists with a specialist interest in neurological illness and its rehabilitation.

We are actively working with Healthcare Improvement Scotland to improve the delivery of neurology care throughout Tayside, Perthshire, Angus and North Fife. We are involved in the implementation of "Clinical Standards for Neurological Health Services".

We have excellent links with General Practice and Public Health in addition to local community and charity groups who, along with our specialist nurses, are working towards improving the care of neurological illness in the community and in particular, for deprived and vulnerable groups.

Education and research

As part of the University of Dundee, our staff are actively involved in a variety of research projects. We are proud to be involved in the teaching of undergraduate students in medicine, science and nursing. We are also part of the East of Scotland Deanery, and have taught GPs, physicians, psychiatrists, neurosurgeons and neurologists, many of whom now practice across the world.
